BVI Spring Regatta aboard the Mary Jewell

Larry and Diana Caillouet are now cruising in the Virgin Islands on their Beneteau 50, Mary Jewell, after placing on the podium in all three events of the 2016 BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival. Mary Jewell took second place in the first event, the Nanny Cay Cup Around Tortola Race. The course consisted of a two hour upwind leg up the Drake Channel past Beef Island and Scrub Island, then a jibe onto a downwind leg along the Atlantic coast of Tortola. After rounding Brewer’s Point at Cane Garden Bay, the boats raced through the Thatch Island Cut, rounded Frenchman’s Cay, and sailed upwind in the Drake Channel again to the finish line. Although the course is approximately 28 miles, Mary Jewell traveled almost 39 miles to complete the course in 5 hours 18 minutes and 10 seconds. In addition to the miles added by tacking upwind, Larry and his crew followed a strategy of sailing well offshore on the north coast of Tortola to avoid the wind shadow from the mountains. Winds were fairly steady at 18-23 knots. Mary Jewell averaged over 7 knots with a brief top speed of 11.0 knots. The crew consisted of Larry, Richard Collins, and Dan Chaney, all of Bowling Green, and Bill Linehan of Indianapolis.

The second event was the Scrub Island Race from Nanny Cay on Tortola to the Scrub Island Resort and Marina. Mary Jewell took second place again behind the same team from the Netherlands who won the first race.

The third event was a three-day six-race regatta using a combination of islands and floating marks to create interesting and challenging courses. Except for the second race which was held during a howling rain storm, all the races enjoyed perfect BVI weather. Diana Caillouet and Ron Weiss joined the crew for the regatta races. After the first day of racing, Mary Jewell was in fourth place in the fleet of sixteen boats in the charter boat division. After the second day Mary Jewell was still in fourth place, 4 points behind the third place boat. In the fifth race Mary Jewell pulled a stunning upset and placed second, ahead of all three previous leaders, gaining three points to move onto the heels of the third place boat. However, in a controversial decision, the race committee voided the entire fifth race based on a protest against the course instructions, so Mary Jewell remained four points behind third place. The final race was in light breezes, not unfamiliar to Barren Lake sailors. Mary Jewell trailed her target, the third place boat named Thunder Girl, at the windward mark, but steadily pulled ahead on the downwind run to the finish to beat Thunder Girl by four places, earning a tie for third place. In the tie breaker, Mary Jewell’s first place finish in Race 3 awarded them the third place trophy.

At 7 years old, Mary Jewell was the oldest boat in the race and raced against mostly new boats with crisp new sails. In a champagne celebration onboard Mary Jewell after the regatta, Larry toasted “To Mary Jewell –the old girl can still shake it!”

Other crew members (left to right) are Bill Linehan from Indianapolis, Richard Collins from Bowling Green, and Marty and Ron Weiss from Stamford, Connecticut. The wine decanter and 4 crystal glasses are marked with the logo of the 45th BVI Spring Regatta, Third Place. The framed map of the British Virgin Islands is the award for winning Second Place in the Around Tortola Race. The trophy with the Lucite sailboat sitting on the table is the award for winning Second Place in the Scrub Island Race.

March Meeting Highlights

il_fullxfull.320147650After our Cleanup on Saturday, we held our first meeting of the year around the good old fire pit, as it was pretty cold. Our wind magnet Deborah Champion, really helped by attracting most of the smoke away from the others..

Commodore Hatcher thanked all that showed up for the cleanup, we got a lot accomplished and the club is looking pretty good. The water and electricity are back on and we are ready for business. The water is just touching the dock, so we have a ways to go for the lake to come up, unless you are launching a sunfish or hobie cat. Steve Stahl has been doing a great job as yardmaster and has watched over the club all winter. Our next spring cleanup is scheduled for April 9th .. Our next Club meeting is April 8th.

Rob recognized our past commodores in attendance, Bill Miller, Gary Reimer, Deborah Champion and Lee Huddleston.

Bill Miller will be on WBKO this Monday 3-21 at 6:25 AM. to discuss the sailing school. Prices will be $40/ person, $75 / two people. And this year it will be held for 4 Saturdays beginning 4/30/16, classes will be 10-12noon with sailing on the lake after. All classes will be held at the Club. Bill will also be back on WBKO at mid-day on 4-26-2016.

We discussed preparations for the Blessing of the Fleet which will be held on April 30th. Plans are coming along, Social Chair Carol Kersting is doing the planning and Gary Reimer will provide a minister for this event. All club members are encouraged to come out and attend this event, which is the start of our season. This is the Clubs 50th Anniversary year!

Our purser, Alan Cannon reports that the bills are out for 2016. All members are requested to send back the enclosed Application, we are trying to update our database of boats and addresses and personal information on members. Thanks for your help on this. The lock combination will be changed soon and all paid up members will be getting the new one.

We will go back to having Friday night club meetings this year and will need cooks for these, the club will reimburse you for the cost of meat and drinks, members attending will need to bring a side or desert to share. Dinner will start at 6pm and the meetings will start at 7pm. We are looking to offer some presentations at these events, so if you have any nautical skills, stirring sea tales, musical talents, or other related things please consider stepping forward and hosting one of these presentations. We have had some pretty good ones in the past, Pete Kafer’s offshore cruising, Lee Huddleston’s Trailering safety, and Max Vinson’s tying a fob demo all spring to mind .. not to forget Bill Millers Guitar playing. Bill Miller is cooking for our April Meeting and brand new member Keith Simpson will be doing a Crab Boil for May ( Wow, what a great start! Thanks Keith). If you see people that are new, please take the time to introduce yourself to them it makes the club a friendlier place to be.

Check the Calendar for the Race events this year, we have all of the old favorites and a couple of new ones, Gary Reimer is looking for people to run some of these Regatta’s and is giving out Race Committee hats for those who are willing to step up. Also, as always we will need help on the Committee boat ( No Experience required, we will train) This is a good way for newer members to see what racing is all about, and a fun way to meet others and get into the club experience if you are starting out.

Here’s to us all having a great season this year and we’ll be looking to see all of you out at the club. I promise I’ll get the transom on the Seaweed painted a better color this year which should be an improvement all can appreciate.

November Telltale 2015

We just completed our Fall workparty this weekend, thanks to all who came out and helped get the club ready for winter. We had about 10 people and 7 kinds of chili, all of which went down easy. We were lucky to have great weather to work in.

This was an eventful year, with a lot of Capital projects: We redid the septic system, replumbed the head and entire waterline, bought a chase boat and added the Arrrr Lounge. We also added a router for Wifi at the dock and generally spruced the place up. Next year we would like to add a boat lift to the lower yard, which has been a long time dream to help people work on their boats. Thanks to all the officers and members for their hard work this year!

We elected a new slate of Officers for 2016:

Rob Hatcher – Commodore
Bill Miller – Vice Commodore
Alan Cannon – Purser
Doug Roberts – Racing Chair
Gary Guss – Scribe
Steve Stahl – Yardmaster
Frank & Carol Kersting – Social Chair
