This month is a chili-cookoff at 6pm and Barry’s wings. This will be our last meeting on the lake this year. Weather is supposed to be good so come on down and compete. The meeting will start at 6pm with dinner.

More tips for improving your racing !
Running (going downwind) is the slowest point of sailing. Here are some tips they should help with running legs of a race.
Sit slightly toward the back – This is the opposite to the beat where you have to sit more forward, in the run you have to sit more backward. This is because the running boat naturally pushes the bow into the water creating drag or in especially high winds capsizing the boat. Instead sit slightly back and allow the bow to right itself.
Don’t go on a dead run – Dead runs slow down boats. The worst point of sail you can be on is a dead run as there is no aerodynamics creating forces. All that is pushing the boat along is the pressure of the wind against the sail. The fastest point of sail is the broad reach as there is a force created through the aerodynamics as well as the pressure of the wind against the sail. At all times try and get on to a broad reach to go to the next mark, because it is much, much faster than a dead run or even a training run. The sails are far more efficient at broad reaches than runs. You may have to weigh the speed gained to the most direct route when considering a run versus a broad reach.
Take off the kicker, cunningham and out haul – The whole point of these devices are to depower the sail on other points of sail. Make sure all these ropes are hanging loose and that the sail is at maximum power. To remember whether or not you have kept them on or off, check out the speed of other boats and see if they are traveling faster or slower than you and then tweak to compensate.
The next regatta is the Great Minnow on October 2. This is a one day race this year, so if committing to two days of racing has kept you from participating in the Great Minnow in the past, come on out this year and enjoy the last official race of the season.

Bill is back ! Our Commodore returned this month and ran the monthly meeting. While he is still a little worse for wear, he is mending pretty well, although sadly he won’t be able to play the violin again. Welcome back Bill ! Thanks to Klarers for providing us with some tasty chili to eat.
The Commodore has mentioned that all mates need to be careful when docking, be sure and use an adequate size of fender against the dock and consider tying it to the dock instead of the boat so the bow won’t grind on the dock, we have a lot of boat traffic past the front of the cove which will make the boats bob up and down. This isn’t good for the boats or the dock.
Purser Sanders gave the Treasury report, the Jolly Roger Regatta made money and the awesome dinner ( low country boil ) was exceptional. The Dixie cup was okay and thanks to an anonymous benefactor did well. Thanks to Rob Wyatt for the T-shirts.
Our next club meeting will be on October 8th and we will have a Chili Cook-off and Barry Wings.
In other food news, the Reimers will host the Breakfast for the Great Minnow and Barry Sanders and Kevin Klarer will cook the dinner which will be burgers and brats, we will be having a potluck for the side dishes, so please bring a side or desert if you are planning to eat.
Please remember the Trashmaster’s Classic which is this week September 18th and we will start promptly at the dock at 7:00-7:15 am. Please wear your club colors when you come out, we will be using the Committee boat and maybe Herb’s pontoon for this. Gary Reimer is coordinating this event.
A nominating committee for the 2011 season is forming now and will be made up of past commodores; if anyone else wishes to serve, please contact an officer. We plan on offering a slate at the November meeting which will be held at Gander Mountains meeting room in Bowling Green.
We had some discussion of the club making a float for the BG. Christmas parade. Herb has an interest but the club didn’t show a lot of interest in putting an entry together for this.
The Christmas party will be December 11th, details will be coming later.

This is usually a two day event where we have the WKU OREC students out for a Sunfish Clinic on Saturday and then a Regatta for them and all the members on Sunday. This year, OREC can’t make it, but Barry will have a Sunfish clinic on Saturday at around 10AM and we will have a Regatta on Sunday at around 10AM.
